EN71 and ASTM F963 are the two standards most brands encounter, and they’re often assumed to be interchangeable. They’re not, and knowing the difference before production, not after, saves real money.
EN71 is the European standard, covering everything from mechanical and physical properties to flammability and chemical migration. ASTM F963 is its US counterpart, overlapping heavily but differing in specific test thresholds and required documentation. A product tested and passed for one market isn’t automatically compliant for the other.
The practical takeaway: confirm your target markets before finalising materials and construction, not after. Retesting a product that’s already in production because it was built to the wrong standard is one of the most avoidable costs in the entire process.
